I recently purchased some property in Colorado that has a small pond (approx .5 - .75 acres) on it. I have stocked the pond with some minnows, bass, and bluegill, and I’ll be adding 10 grass carp in a month. I purchased my fish from Colorado Catch and they referred me to your website. The fish have been in the pond about a month now. I lost 12 of the 50 bass (striped bass-white bass hybrids) within the first week but since then, I have not seen any dead fish. Prior to purchasing the property, the pond was used as a watering hole for about 20 cows. I suspect there may be a few toxins in the water and was wondering if there was anyway to make the water more healthy for my fish. I’m also fearful of winterkill. Last winter, the pond (about 6 feet at deepest point) froze over for about a month. There was some type of fish in there prior to the ones I stocked so apparently there’s a good deal of oxygen in the water and my neighbors said the pond has had fish in it for years, but I’d hate to lose the fish I just put in there. Do you think I need to install something (maybe an aerator) to prevent winterkill?
